In short. Energy-based and injected treatments change skin quality and texture. What they cannot do about a neck whose covering no longer fits, and who they suit.
Key points
- If the skin of your neck is crepey, sun-damaged or thin but there is no actual excess of it, treatments aimed at quality are aimed at the right thing.
- If the skin forms a fold that hangs, no course of quality treatments removes it, and the money is better directed at the rung that does.
- One examination settles which of the two you have.
Non-surgical neck treatments are the rung most often bought for a neck whose real problem is skin. This page sets out what they do, so that the decision is made on accurate grounds.
What they act on
Energy-based treatments deliver energy into the skin to prompt a healing response, and the collagen laid down afterwards changes the skin's quality. Injected treatments that act on skin quality work on the same target by a different route. Firmness, thickness and surface texture can improve, gradually, over weeks to months.
What they cannot change
The amount of skin. There is no non-surgical treatment that makes a covering smaller without removing part of it. A course can make the skin you have look and feel better, and the fold it forms across the neck remains, because the fold is produced by how much skin there is rather than by its quality.
Quality and quantity are different questions
If the skin of your neck is crepey, sun-damaged or thin but there is no actual excess of it, treatments aimed at quality are aimed at the right thing. If the skin forms a fold that hangs, no course of quality treatments removes it, and the money is better directed at the rung that does. One examination settles which of the two you have.
Why the neck is a hard area
Thin skin, constant movement, and a high proportion of necks whose main finding is quantity after weight change or after years of sun. The part of the problem these treatments can reach is real, and it is the smaller part of the whole. That is the honest reason a course on a neck with a genuine fold usually disappoints.
What muscle-relaxing injections do and do not do
They soften platysma cords while the effect lasts, and they are temporary and repeated. They answer a band, which is a muscle finding, and they do not tighten skin, remove skin, or change the fat under the chin. A neck whose complaint is a covering rather than a cord is the wrong neck for them.
What a course costs besides the money
Time. Several sessions spaced apart means months before a judgement can be made, and if the honest answer was always going to be an operation, those months were spent on the wrong rung. That is worth being clear about before starting rather than after finishing.
What to ask before buying one
Which layer is this treating, and what will it not change? How many sessions, over how long? What would you recommend if I decided not to do this? And what would a reasonable change look like on my neck? A clinic that answers all four plainly is describing the same limits this page does.
Treat the medical finding first if there is
- A new or changing lump in the neck, or one that does not move on swallowing.
- Difficulty swallowing, a persistent voice change, or difficulty breathing.
- Swelling on one side only, or a neck that has become tender and red.
What the ladder contains, and where it stops, is set out in The Neck Ladder, from Skin Care to a Lift. What holds a result over the years is explained in Maintaining a Neck Result, and What Reverses It.
Frequently asked questions
Do non-surgical neck treatments tighten anything at all?
They improve skin quality, firmness and surface texture, and some patients see a modest change in looseness. That is a real effect and it is not a change in the amount of skin. A neck that drapes will still drape when the course has finished, because the covering is unchanged in quantity.
Why does the neck respond less well than the face?
Because the skin is thin, the area moves constantly, and the problem is often one of quantity after a weight change. Treatments that act on quality reach the part of the problem they can reach, and where there is a genuine excess of skin that is the smaller part of it. The result is usually smaller than the expectation that was set.
Should I have a course before deciding about an operation?
It is a reasonable thing to discuss, and it is not a substitute for the assessment. If the finding is skin that no longer recoils, a course delays the decision that would help. If the finding is texture rather than a fold, it is aimed at the right thing. The assessment is what tells the two apart.
Risks & Limitations
- Non-surgical treatment improves skin quality and removes no skin.
- Muscle-relaxing injections soften platysma bands while the effect lasts, and then wear off.
- The neck continues to age after any procedure, and further weight change alters a result.
- Scars from a lift are long and do not disappear. They mature over 6–12 months.
When to Seek Care
- A new or changing lump in the neck, or one that does not move on swallowing.
- Difficulty swallowing, a persistent voice change, or difficulty breathing.
- Swelling on one side only, or a neck that has become red, hot or painful.
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain — seek emergency care immediately.
